Goreme is a small, fantastic and unique city in Cappadocia, Turkey. Goreme is surrounded on all sides by incredible mountains and rocks. Here you have the opportunity to live in the caves of the old city, which is why it is often chosen as a starting point for getting to know Cappadocia.
The city of Goreme is the center of the historical and geographical region of Cappadocia and its main tourist base.
In addition to the original landscape, the Goreme churches are famous here. Monastic life on the outskirts of the modern city began in the III-IV centuries. Remains of churches, chapels, cells and warehouses dug into the rocks have been preserved in the rocks on the outskirts of Göreme.
Despite the fact that the administrative center of the region is the city of Nevsehir, the main stop for tourists to access the main attractions of Cappadocia is this small town with an unusual landscape. The bus stop is on the main square. On different sides of the square there are many restaurants, cafes, ATMs and several car, bicycle and ATV rental offices.
The valley in which the picturesque town is located, as well as dozens of neighboring valleys, were formed as a result of the eruption of Erjies volcanoes. For many millions of years, they filled the local space with ash and hot lava, which solidified in the most bizarre combinations and forms. Then water and wind did their thing. People also contributed to this transformation, adapting a large part of the stone formations for housing and farm buildings.
There are about 400 churches in the Goreme area and its immediate surroundings. The ensemble of churches that we see in the outskirts of the city appeared approximately after 850. The frescoes that decorate them can be attributed to the second half of the 11th century.
In addition to historical monuments, there are many natural monuments around the city. The town is the center of the National Historical and Natural Park of the same name, which covers an area of 300 km². Lyubov Valley, Golubina Valley, Chervona and Rozheva Valleys, all of them are within the boundaries of the national park. The National Park and Cave Settlements of Cappadocia are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
