Sozopol is a classic Bulgarian town, the neighborhoods of which are huddled on several rocky peninsulas with picturesque bays. Narrow green streets, houses with red tiled roofs, quartz beaches and sapphire water - local landscapes are begging for a picture.
This resort center has a very rich history: in the 6th century BC. the Greeks founded a colony here called Apollonia, 500 years later the village was conquered by Marcus Lucullus, and another 500 years later it was rebuilt and named "Sozopol", which means "city of salvation". Another 2,000 years passed and this coast became an unspoken "gathering place" for the local cultural bohemia.
In 2017, the city was ranked 6th in the "Best Destinations in Europe" rating. And not for nothing. The prices here are very moderate, the air is clean, the beaches are civilized. There are not many active entertainments here, but there are curiosities - at every step. Families with children and people who prefer a quiet time will return from Sozopol with a lot of impressions.
When choosing a time for rest, you should focus on the purpose of the trip. Lovers of leisurely walks come to the resort in May and September, but ardent fans of beach holidays buy hot tours to Sozopol in June-August.
It is especially comfortable here in the second half of June to the beginning of July: the sea is already very warm, the heat has not yet set in, and it rarely rains. By the way, in the summer, several music festivals are held here at once, which will be interesting for children. In the northern part of the city there is a beach with a park area "Pershiy" (however, you have to go down a ladder into the water here). The "golden trinity" is also located near the city: Golden Fish, Quartzite and Smokin - the three best beaches of Sozopol with golden sand.
Many hotels operate on the principle of "all inclusive", but travelers often dine in mekhanas - traditional restaurants of Bulgarian cuisine. By the way, there is nothing heavy or spicy on the menu. And fans of fresh Mediterranean fruits will be able to buy goods at the bazaar between the New and Old towns.
The old town is an open-air museum. Once around every turn of this labyrinth of alleys you could see a mill ("harman" in Bulgarian), which is why the people of Sozopol call this area "Harmanit". Be sure to come here and walk next to the defensive fortress with towers and see the 2nd century amphitheater. And what is the castle with the round turrets of Ravadinovo worth ... The latter, by the way, was built already in our time. However, not everyone will notice this, because all the halls of the building are furnished "in the style of antiquity".
In a city that looks like a treasure chest, there must be not only ancient mansions, but also a location where a mysterious treasure is hidden. And she is here! In the Archaeological Museum you can see treasures found under water. If you get bored of sightseeing, then get on a ship and go to Raptom - the Bulgarian Amazon. In this reserve you will find a real jungle. There are no piranhas here, but turtles, dolphins, seals and ... cacti chose the tropical forest instead. Nearby is Strandzha National Park, where you can walk through oak forests and listen to the singing of mountain streams. You can buy a tour to Sozopol in "ALF". One of the main attractions of the city is its transport. A small locomotive with several open carriages travels around all streets (including remote areas). Movement interval - 30 minutes. Another popular way of transportation is the sea "comets", which will take you both to remote beaches and to Burgas, Nessebar or Varna.
