Telavi is a city in eastern Georgia, the administrative center of the Kakheti region. It is located at an altitude of 650 m above sea level, 70 km from Tbilisi.
Telavi is home to several of the region's world-renowned wineries, home to art museums, castles and theater and, of course, a major destination for "wine tours." Telavi is located in the heart of the region and is an ideal place to stop for lunch as well as a great base for two or three day excursions.
There are many historical monuments in the region: Ikalto and Shuamta monasteries, Alaverdi - is the second highest Christian cathedral in Georgia after Tbilisi's Sameba. A visit to Lake Lopota, which has recently turned into a VIP-class resort, is especially popular among tourists.
More than 70 varieties of wines are produced in Telavi, among them: "Kindzmarauli", "Saperavi" and "Tsynandali". In addition to wineries, tourists can also visit home wine cellars and learn some of the secrets of making and storing wine at home. Master classes of Georgian cuisine, wine tasting are held. In autumn, you can take part in the grape harvest, see how in Kakheti grape juice is squeezed into huge clay vessels - "kvevri" and try the main national delicacy of Georgians, "churchkhela".
