Elis or Ilia (Greek: Ηλεία, Ileia) is a historical region in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece. It is administered as a regional unit of the modern region of Western Greece. Its capital is Pyrgos. Until 2011, it was Alice Prefecture covering the same area.
The modern regional unit almost coincides with ancient Elis of the classical period. Here lie the ancient ruins of the cities of Elis, Epitalion and Olympia, famous for the ancient Olympic Games, which began in 776 BC.
Today's Elis is a beautiful sandy coast stretching for many kilometers, with pine forests stretching to the very shore and olive plantations
