The seaside resort of San Remo was an important civic center in the late 19th century and a popular resort until the mid-20th century, and many of the grand houses and hotels you can see in the town date from that period.The city is located in the Liguria region of Italy and is one of the country's westernmost beach resorts, close to the border with France.
Beaches of San Remo
There are a few beaches in the center of San Remo, but they are quite small and most people prefer the beaches outside the city, such as those in Bussano, Bordighera and Tajia.
Religious monuments
Almost all popular Italian destinations have churches worth visiting, and San Remo is no exception.One religious monument here of interest to visitors is north of the main center and is the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa.It was built above the city in the 17th and 18th centuries and has a decorative baroque facade.Built on the site of a former church, the sanctuary has long helped guide sailors returning to the city across the sea.Another important religious building in San Remo is the San Siro Cathedral, founded in the 12th century, although the current Romanesque building was mainly built/reconstructed in the 17th century after the previous church was damaged by a naval bombardment.
Sanremo: the city of flowers
The city is regularly referred to as the "city of flowers", celebrated in Sanremo on the last Sunday of each March with a procession that includes ships decorated with flowers and accompanied by music.At other times of the year, you can visit the Flower Market, which is considered the largest in Italy.Garden lovers will also find some spectacular semi-tropical botanical gardens to visit in the surrounding area, including around the villas.
