Lido di Jesolo is a purpose-built beach resort in northeastern Italy on the Adriatic Sea near Venice.Its kilometers of sandy beach, rows of sunbeds and nightly entertainment attract thousands of vacationers every summer.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Jesolo (pronounced Yezolo) was a small and insignificant settlement on the mainland in the Veneto region.Located near the northern edge of the Venetian lagoon, Jesolo also lay close to a long sandy coastline.By the 1950s, a whole new town had begun to appear along this sandy coast."Lido di Jesolo" means the coast of Jesolo, and this beach town now overshadows the historic center of old Jesolo, a few miles inland.Today, when Italians talk about Jesolo, they usually think of the Lido.Lido di Jesolo, created entirely by tourism, is very different from the typical Italian town.Its layout, its shops and its services are designed for the convenience of summer visitors to the resort, giving it a rather strange and unreal atmosphere.There are first aid stations and lifeguards, sunbeds and showers, snacks and ice cream, mini golf.The city stretched along 16 km of coastline, only extending inland for a very short distance (only two or three streets).In addition, there are parking lots and access roads.There is one main street - with several name changes - that runs the length of the town, lined with shops selling cheap clothes and beach goods.
There are many restaurants, snack bars, cafes and ice cream cafes.
Lido di Jesolo is not the same as Venice Lido (Lido di Venezia), which is an island a few miles to the southwest, between Venice and the sea. The word "Lido" simply means sea shore.
Transport
Three city bus routes operate within the city.Routes and bus numbers are indicated on the free tourist information map.Tickets must be purchased in advance at newsstands or at the bus station.The bus station on Piazzale Picchi is located in a rather secluded place and it is not particularly pleasant to get there on foot (due to wide roads without sidewalks and construction sites).It is the terminus for long-distance buses.There is no railway station in Lido di Jesolo.
