Livigno
Season: end of November - March
Tucked away deep in the Alta Valtellina mountains, the ski resort of Livigno has a huge reputation as a freeride destination, but it shines more with its deep snow, lifts and world-class pistes.Unlike many ski resorts in Europe, Livigno is a resort not only for skiers, it is also a paradise for snowboarders.Numerous world-class parks complement the ski resort's vast freeride terrain.Livigno is one of the youngest ski resorts located in the northern part of Italy, on the border with Switzerland.
The name "Livinho" has German roots and literally translates as "avalanche".In the Middle Ages, this territory was inhabited mainly by shepherds who engaged in agricultural activities, but often the only way to improve their financial situation was smuggling.Nowadays, Livigno has been declared a duty-free trade zone, but the city became a resort only in the 70s of the 20th century.
Livigno is located in picturesque Lombardy, 35 km from Bormio.Livigno is part of the single Alta Valtellina complex, which allows you to ski in different places using one ski pass, and free transport runs between lifts.
Skiing and snowboarding, lifts:
Livigno's skiing and snowboarding terrain is bisected by a wide valley along which the town sprawls. Both sides (Carosello and Mottolino) are connected by a ski bus and share a pass.
115 km of trails are small compared to the breadth of off-piste and backcountry. Most of the slopes of the resort are at an altitude well above 2000 m and are oriented from the northeast to the northwest, which provides excellent snow conditions.
Carosello, whose height reaches 2797 meters, is the most suitable place for beginner skiers. The descents here are not as sharp as in other regions, you can choose short or long ones. From the slope of Bellavista, it is worth admiring the wonderful view of the city and the local lake.To the west and with lifts stretching right from the edge of town, the Carosello 3000 area is the larger of the two sides. 3 gondolas and 6 chairs lift to a spacious height of 980 meters. The backside of Carosello is a freerider's paradise, as well as skiing through the trees and routes around the avalanche fence from Costacci.
Mottolino Fun includes more difficult descents, for example, the famous Giorgio Rocca slope, which is preferred by experienced skiers.Descents alternate with tracks for those who have experience in this matter and have an average level of training. The descent height of Monte della Neve is 2785 meters.
On the eastern side of the valley, Mottolino has 1 gondola and 5 chairlifts serving a similar rolling vertical at an altitude of approximately 970 m.
To get to the gondola and chairlift from the city, you need to walk or take local transport, the area for beginners is relatively limited.
Alternative access to Mottolino for day-trippers from Bormio is via the chairlifts in the village of Trepalle or Passo d'Aira. The freeride options around Monte della Neve, 2,785 meters high, are huge, especially in Vallaccio. The relief of Vallacci is mostly soft or moderate - nothing extreme here. The Snow Park at Mottolino above Trepalle is a sight that rivals the world's best Laax Park in Switzerland.Heliskis are available in Livigno.
