Landmarks

It is home to one of the largest tourist ports in Southern Europe and the birthplace of a prestigious medical school that was founded in the 8th century. The rich architectural heritage of its historic center reflects the succession of rulers who have ruled in Salerno over the centuries, including Etruscans, Romans, Lombards and Normans.

  • Cathedral of San Matteo. Although it is almost never mentioned among the most beautiful churches in Italy, I am sure that the Cathedral of Salerno will leave you in awe.The entrance is guarded by two lions that lead you to a beautiful courtyard surrounded by a portico and a 12th-century belfry.
  • Gardens of Minerva. The Gardens of Minerva were founded in the 14th century by the Salernite physician and botanist Matteo Silvatico to provide medicinal Salerno Medical School, famous for herbs and plants. There are many types of plants, mostly those that have been used as medicinal plants in the past, including the legendary mandrake, which was believed to have special powers.
  • Roberto Papi Museum. About a 5-minute drive from the Minerva Gardens, you'll find the Roberto Papi Museum, housed in an aristocratic palace. This is an unusual museum that showcases the private collection of medical and surgical instruments owned by Dr. Papi. The instruments are grouped by medical and surgical discipline and include everything from false teeth and anatomical eyes to ceramics and medically themed paintings. The coolest thing to see is the recreation of old medical facilities and laboratories.
