Sorrento is a small city in Italy, distinguished by an extremely favorable location, because it completely occupies a small peninsula of the Bay of Naples. The city is hidden among luxurious lemon and orange groves on a gentle rock at an altitude of 50 m, washed by the sea, and from its embankments there are wonderful views of Mount Vesuvius and Naples.
Architecture
Many ruins and traces of ancient settlements have been discovered near Sorrento, including tunnels leading to the sea, a water reservoir used in an underground network of aqueducts. Beautiful villas and hotels from the Belle Epoque, drowning in gardens, and well-kept promenades speak of the former popularity of the resort.
There are two ports on the steep coast: Marina Grande and Marina Piccola. The Villa Comunale, a beautiful city park above the Marina Grande, offers a wonderful view of the bay. First of all, there was a garden of the Franciscan monastery here. You should definitely take a look at the baroque church, as well as the 13th century cloister adjacent to it. in oriental style.
City center
The center of the city forms the Torquato Tasso Square (Piazza Torquato Tasso) with a marble statue of the poet, a native of Sorrento (1544-1595). A little to the west is the Cathedral of Santi Filippo e Giacomo (SS Filippo e Giacomo), originally built in the Romanesque style, and its current facade acquired in the 20th century.
Inside you can see the old and new marquetry, the production of which the city is famous for. In the historic center (centro storico) at the corner of Via Correale and Via Cesareo stands a frescoed loggia.
