Sperlonga is a small town located on a rocky promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, a short train ride from Rome.
At the foot of the cape, a large beach with soft sand stretches to crystal clear waters that lap the land with gentle shallow waves, and on
on top of a rocky hill you will find a lovely white village with winding alleys, cute cafes and stunning sea views.
Old town
The old town of Sperlonga has beautiful whitewashed houses and small alleys decorated with cascading flowers, with stunning views of the sea.
Be sure to go up all the stairs and look into all the courtyards: they hide the cutest decorations!
Beaches
Sperlonga has one of the great beaches near Rome, perfect for those looking for a relaxing day on the sand. The water here is shallow and clear, making it ideal especially for families and non-swimmers.If you imagine the sea as snorkeling and diving, this is not the place for you, but for sunbathing and sea rowing, Sperlonga is perfect. The beach here is mostly occupied by hotels and "stabilimenti" (beach clubs), so if you want to get a good spot, it's a good idea to reserve sunbeds and umbrellas.
Visit the palace of Emperor Tiberius and the local archaeological museum
The ruins of Tiberius Palace are one of the best things to do in Sperlonga, Italy. The ruins are close to the city and access also includes entry to the local archaeological museum, which has impressive sculptures of Polyphemus, Scylla, Odysseus and Ganymede, something history and sculpture buffs cannot miss.
The villa was only discovered in 1957 during road works in the area.Roadside excavations first uncovered the statues, both in what turned out to be an ancient villa and in a nearby natural cave, and it is interesting to note that they are largely connected to the hero Odysseus and the story. This is due to the setting of the odyssey, which seems to recall places in this area and southern Italy (Circeo, Scylla in Calabria just as an example).
Taste the specialties of Sperlonga
Sperlonga is between Rome and Naples, the two main food capitals, and is therefore a fantastic place to eat.Pizza, seafood and fish are delicious here: start your evening with an aperitif, then enjoy your gourmet favorites in one of the many unpretentious authentic restaurants in the area.
