Aosta is a city in the Alps, located in northwestern Italy. In ancient times, the Salas tribes lived here. Their settlement was destroyed by order of the Roman emperor Augustus in 25 BC.In honor of this victory, the famous Arch of Augustus was built, which has survived to this day. The Romans built their city here.Modern Aosta has preserved the Roman layout, numerous monuments of that era remain, in particular the city walls and towers.
Castles
On the outskirts of Aosta there are many medieval castles and fortresses - about seven dozen.Far from all of them are in perfect condition, some of them have only ruins, but some have been preserved. One of them is the Fenis Castle (Castello di Fenis), built at the beginning of the 13th century.
Issogne Castle (Castello di Issogne) is located 40 km from Aosta. There is an assumption that it was built long before the middle of the 12th century, when it was first mentioned in official documents: perhaps the castle was rebuilt from an ancient Roman villa.
Finally, the Verrès Castle (Castello di Verrès) is another monumental building that has come down to us from the Middle Ages. Its appearance is purely utilitarian - a huge stone cube with rare small windows and a complete lack of decor.
Shopping
Those staying at the ski resort of Pila often take the 20-minute gondola ride from there to the town of Aosta to experience its delights. There are many shops selling delicious local delicacies, arts and crafts; and plenty of restaurants and bars to sample.
Events
Every year on January 30 and 31 in the center of Aosta, the thousand-year fair of Sant Orso is held. Its origins have been lost to time, so much so that some have set the year 1000 as its original date.So each fair is now numbered as if the first took place at the beginning of the second millennium of our era.Attracting visitors from far and wide, it is a craft fair with artefacts of wood, soapstone, wrought iron, lace and wool fabrics, as well as farming equipment, furniture, household utensils and sculptures.
