Ambalangoda is a small town and beach on the west coast of Sri Lanka between Hikkaduwa and Bentothe. Sometimes this town is even considered a suburb or a beach of Hikkaduwa, which is not entirely correct because it is located 15 km away from it.
Ambalangoda is known to most tourists as the center of traditional wooden masks. Indeed, this is the best and most famous place to buy or see traditional wooden carved masks, for which there are two museums and several small family workshops. Along with masks, local craftsmen also make unique wooden dolls. But Ambalangoda is also a good beach resort.
Ambalangoda's popularity as a beach resort pales in comparison to neighboring Hikkaduwa and Bentote. However, the beaches of Ambalangoda for a separate category of tourists are even more attractive because, unlike more popular resorts, you will not see crowds of tourists on them. On the contrary, they are always deserted here. In addition, they are more natural: the coastline is not built up with hotels and restaurants, there are no annoying tuk-tuk drivers and boatmen, partying young people. There is nothing here at all, rest is quiet and peaceful like in the village.
Ambalangoda has a beautiful stretch of white sandy beach and a fascinating rocky little island off the coast.
The resort is located approximately 85 km from Colombo.
