The city of Galle is noticeably different from many other cities and resorts in Sri Lanka. This city boasts an interesting history as it was first ruled by the Portuguese, then captured by the Dutch and then handed over to the British. It is now a Sri Lankan city and this mix of different influences has made it a very interesting tourist destination.
The old town is located on the territory of a former fort and is surrounded by an old brick wall. This part of Halle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an example of a fortified city built by European colonizers in Asia. In the Old Town, beautiful colonial mansions and old churches coexist with traditional Asian houses and Buddhist stupas.
Galle Fort is a popular place for day tours, a lot of buses and tourist minivans come here during the day. Nowadays, dozens of jewelry boutiques, souvenir shops and small restaurants are open on the central streets of the old fort.
