The city of Hambantota is located on the southern coast of the island, 240 km from Colombo and is the capital of the southern province of Sri Lanka.
Since 2009, the city began to develop actively. The state invests huge funds for the development of the region. Modern office buildings, shopping centers, roads, power lines appeared. In 2010, the first stage of the international seaport, built in accordance with world standards, was opened. The port is a free economic zone, companies from Russia, China, India and the UAE participated in its construction. In 2013, the second international airport of Sri Lanka (Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport) was opened in the town of Mattala, 30 km from Hambantota. In 2016, Ridhiagama Safari Park opened, Sri Lanka's first wildlife park of a new type. In 2006, the Mirijavila Botanical Garden was established, transforming an arid area in the immediate vicinity of Hambantota into a lush tropical garden.
Being on the path of many tourist routes, Hambantota is currently becoming an increasingly popular resort located in close proximity to Bundala, Yala, Udawalawe, Ussangoda national parks.
