Cherkasy region is located in the central forest-steppe part of the country on both banks of the middle reaches of the Dnieper and the Southern Bug, in the Middle Dnipro region.
The oblast borders Kyiv oblast in the north, Kirovohrad oblast in the south, Poltava oblast in the east, and Vinnytsia oblast in the west. It stretched from southwest to northeast for 245 km, from north to south for 150 km.
