Mukachevo (formerly Mukachevo) is one of the most famous tourist centers, traditionally included in excursion routes around Transcarpathia. The architecture of the city, which hints at the Austro-Hungarian style, numerous castles and temples annually attract thousands of tourists from Ukraine and abroad. There is a lot to see and where to go. Small coffee shops, the peculiar dialect of their regular visitors, in which more Hungarian words are guessed than Ukrainian, the impregnable Palanok castle, a variety of luxurious houses and palaces create the impression of being somewhere abroad.
Mukacheve was located at the crossroads of important trade routes. At one time, it was part of various states, which left its mark on the ethnographic composition, customs and traditions of the city.
Mukachevo was first mentioned in the 12th century. in Hungarian chronicles, although Slavic settlements existed as early as the VI-IX centuries. In the X-XI centuries. the settlement was part of Kyivan Rus. Starting from the XI century. Mukachevo passed to the possessions of Hungary, the Principality of Galicia-Volyn, Austria, Austria-Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. In 1944, Mukacheve became part of the Soviet Union. Nowadays it is a part of independent Ukraine.
The important strategic location of the settlement led to the construction of a defensive structure. The fortification built on the top of the mountain, which existed already in the 9th century, withstood the raids of Tatar-Mongol nomads. Over time, the castle is completed and strengthened. After a long siege and capture of the Palanok castle by the troops of the Austrian emperor, it becomes the most powerful fortress of the empire.
Nowadays, there is a historical museum in Palanok Castle in Mukachevo.
