The southern coast of Sri Lanka is perhaps the most interesting part of the island's coast in terms of cultural experience (probably due to the fact that the tourist infrastructure here is much less developed than on the west coast). People come here to laze on incredible beaches, live in the colonial mansions of Halle, visit tiny sleepy villages, admire rice terraces and endless coconut plantations, explore lost Buddhist temples and, of course, go on safari in national parks.
The main city and gateway to the South Coast is the absolutely charming colonial city of Galle. The second, less well-known, but no less charming city on the southern coast that deserves the attention of travelers is Matara.
When choosing a beach or hotel option on the South coast, you need to take into account local specifics. The undisputed favorites of the region are the beaches of Unawatuna, Mirissa and Tangalla - large sandy beaches with a lot of different accommodation and beach infrastructure.
