The Transcarpathian region is located on the southwestern slopes and foothills of the Eastern Carpathians, and also includes the Transcarpathian lowland. In the south, the region borders Romania (Judges of Satu Mare and Maramures), in the southwest - with the Hungarian region of Sabolch-Satmar-Bereg, in the west - with the Presov and Kosice regions of Slovakia, and in the north - with the Podkarpackie Voivodeship of Poland. This is the only region of Ukraine bordering Slovakia and Hungary. It is also the only region of Ukraine that borders four foreign countries. Thus, the Transcarpathian region is a kind of Ukrainian "window to Europe". In the north and east, the region borders two other regions of Ukraine - Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk. In terms of area, the region occupies the penultimate place among twenty-four Ukrainian regions, ahead of only Chernivtsi region.
